ABOUT BILBAO
Bilbao is a paradigmatic example of how a city can reinvent itself and adapt to contemporary challenges. For much of the 20th century, it was an important industrial hub, especially in sectors such as steel, shipbuilding and port activity. This economic model boosted its growth, but also left a mark of environmental degradation and a labour crisis when traditional industries began to decline in the 1980s. Faced with this situation, Bilbao undertook an ambitious process of economic, social and urban transformation, betting on industrial reconversion and the revitalization of degraded spaces. The creation of modern infrastructures, such as the metro and the airport, and the redesign of the seafront, with the estuary as its backbone, were fundamental to its regeneration.
Today, Bilbao is a centre of innovation, technology and sustainability, with a business network increasingly oriented towards emerging sectors. The city has embraced digitalisation and the knowledge economy, attracting investment and talent in fields such as biotechnology, creative industries and information technology.
